Heads up: Police reportedly checking bags for alcohol on the lakefront

From the Tribverse: Police hope cameras, random checks curb lakefront violence

The article makes no mention of cyclists, and the checks are "random" (of course!), but if for whatever reason you find yourself transporting beer (for moderate consumption by persons of legal drinking age in a private residence, of course!) by bike via the Lakefront Trail, then you might want to take care to avoid drawing attention and/or have an alternate crosstown route handy, just in case.

Oh, and, like, there's been crime and stuff there lately, so watch out for that, too. Personally, I worry more about asshats running stop signs at the crosswalks in the dark than about unruly mobs who may or may not be drinking, but whatever.

I expect the police to try and overstep the law, what really made my head spin was how well people where cooperating. Do people care that little about their rights?

Only those pertaining to the tragedy of the commons, it seems.

IIRC, you have to give them permission 95% of the time to search.

Of course. And if you don't, then they politely ask you to leave.
