Two really interesting articles. I wish I could plaster campus with the first. As for the second, I just checked out two books from the library on Victor Gruen, the architect who designed the first suburban shopping malls. Gruen thought of malls much more like the "town center" concept that's faddish today, to the point of including grocery stores, post offices, and libraries; later in life, he called the all-chain store malls that had been built after him "bastardized."
And hey now, Gurnee Mills is a great place to find last year's leftovers for cheap. If you can bear it.
On that note, I just found this. "Gurnee Mills will attract new options in shopping and dining to our area" must be the understatement of the previous century.
Ha, you have a better memory than I do! As I recall, they wanted to redevelop the mall into a satellite city with apartments, etc, too. Just like that article!

Am I particularly interested in mall redevelopment?
No, but I remembered you giving a presentation to all those Europeans once about that sort of thing.
