Labor Week

Is there any civilization between Princeton and East Moline? Or maybe just a place to use the restroom and eat a cheap lunch? I'm taking Labor Day week off, and I have an idea. But the last time I was on that stretch was almost a disaster, and that was on a supported group ride.

Your biggest potential enemies on that ride are sun and wind. There's nothing on the trail, but US 6 runs parallel through a string of towns just 1-3 miles south of the canal.

Geneseo is a good-sized town with at least eight restaurants and lodging. My 2002 edition of MS Streets & Trips shows one or more eating places in Wyanet, Sheffield, Annawan, Atkinson, Geneseo, Colona, Carbon Cliff, and Silvis.

Here's a tip: Google "townname Illinois" plus "motel" or "restaurant" or "gas" (for convenience stores) to see a map of the results (take out the quotes, of course).

I'm not 100% that this is the place, but I ate one of the finest Chinese meals of my life in Geneseo. I was there in '04 with about a dozen folks-- every dish was divine.

The Hennepin canal trail sucked eggs tho'. The trail consists of 'pea gravel', pebble sized rocks that were like slush to ride upon. We took country roads instead.

Good luck.

Yeah, I wasn't a huge fan of the Hennepin Canal Trail, but... it's there?

Maybe I should just take a bus directly to Moline and then rent a bike, but rentals never have carrying racks and I always have so much junk to drag around.

Here's another bike adventure to consider since you're into astronomy: take Amtrak to Kewanee, ride backroads to the Rock Island Trail in Toulon, and follow that to the outskirts of Peoria. Along the way, you can check out the scale model of the solar system (see sidebar of Ride 37 in my book). Then either ride back to Kewanee or ride east-southeast to Bloomington to catch Amtrak home.

Home of the Interplanetary Bicycle Ride, I take it? Nuts, I'm running out of summer.
